What Is The Golden Ratio?

The golden ratio is one of the most important of design elements that any professional designer and agencies are using it in their designs to give it more balance, harmony and symmetry.

This consistency and balance have been identified for thousands of centuries, starting from the architecture and building such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Parthenon in Athens to Petra Jordan. Also, the famous painters have used the golden ratio in their artworks like Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel to Mona Lisa, as well as you can see it in a big brand around the world like Mercedes Benz, Pepsi and Apple.

The golden ratio depends on a simple equation and complex at the same time; it needs to know how can account the numbers and use in any artwork, also known as the Golden Section, Golden Mean, exists when a line is divided into two parts and the longer part (a) divided by, the smaller part (b) is equal to the sum of (a) + (b) separated by (a), which both equal 1.618.


The golden ratio has a many of benefits that will help anyone to give the design or any artworks the balance and harmony between the elements with right basis, also it gives the design more visualize and attractive.


In Graphic design, we have many elements that can use the golden ratio on it, such as logos, posters, calligraphy, mobile Applications and websites, all these elements should use the golden ratio to achieve aesthetic consistency and harmony between images and text, furthermore it gives the shapes more movements between the elements and shapes to give the eyes more comfortability when you look at them.

The golden ratio has three different types we can use it by design type, as:

Grid Work: The Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds depends on split any image to thirds horizontally and vertically to give the picture nine grids to limitation inside it. this kind of method will help the designers on the distribution of elements accurately and efficiently, also will help them to deal with positive and negative space in the design.

Columns and Font Sizes: Fibonacci Sequences

One of the important golden ratios is Fibonacci numbers. This rule is based on sequence with numbers 0 and 1 are added together to produce the next and continuance numbers in the sequence, such as 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34 … etc. This rule will provide to the designers to coordinate and organize the crowded elements in the right location and position in the posters or any artworks.

Golden Spirals ratio

With multi rules of golden ratio and different methods for organizing the artworks, one of the other important rules is golden spirals that depend on getting wider base by a factor equal to the golden ratio for every piece of artwork, also this kind of ratio are formed it by using Fibonacci grade.

In the artworks is using the spirals for as long as the ratios and numbers convergent. This theory is controlling in negative space and visual interested should be fit within the spiral.
